Het zal je maar overkomen. Je gaat naar de autodealer, koopt een nieuwe SUV met een 4wheel drive-sticker op de achterkant van de auto. Het eerste de beste bosweggetje blijkt vreemd genoeg al een probleem. Niet om doorheen te komen. Vervolgens blijkt bij de APK keuring dat die A-merk autodealer je een 2 wiel aangedreven SUV heeft verkocht, ondanks de illusie die werd gewekt dat het om een 4wheeldrive ging.

Zoek de overeenkomsten met het metaforische verhaaltje hierboven. Je koopt 1.000.000 impressies, en aan het einde van de rit blijkt dat ongeveer 50% daadwerkelijk zichtbaar is geweest voor het online bereik. En nog erger, deze situatie is al meer dan 10 jaar aan de gang, en evenzo bij de A-merk exploitanten. Amerikaans, Europees of Nederlands, allemaal verkopen ze impressies waarbij nooit een waarschuwing wordt verstrekt of iets in leveringsvoorwaarden wordt opgenomen met een waarschuwing dat de helft van uw ingekochte impressies kunnen worden aangemerkt als ‘waste’. Dan heb ik het nog niet eens over die wel zichtbare 50% of die aankomt bij uw doelgroep. Dat is een ander onderwerp.
Het vreemde is de reactie van veel online exploitanten. Over liever gezegd, het uitblijven van een reactie. In een tijd dat grote bedrijven genadeloos worden gestraft voor het achterhouden van cruciale informatie terwijl hiervan men wel op de hoogte was. Ik hoef geen DSB-tje van stal te halen om mijn punt duidelijke te maken. Dan heb ik het over uitgevers die al lang en breed bezig zijn met het in kaart brengen van tijd-in-beeld en ‘waste-percentages’, maar deze gegevens niet met adverteerders of mediabureaus delen. Schandalig, Adverteerders en mediabureaus die aardig wat centjes besteden hebben het volste rechte om kennis te nemen van die testen en gegevens. Al zijn ze niet onafhankelijk en meet iedereen het weer op zijn eigen manier. Dat wil zeggen, onafhankelijke cijfers op een identieke manier gemeten waardoor ze vergelijkbaar zijn, dat moet het uiteindelijk worden. Maar voor nu is alles welkom. Dat gezegd hebbende zie ik een rol weggelegd voor adverteerders en bureaus om dit gewoon te eisen. Dus afrekenen om basis van vertoningen. En het liefste, kwalitatieve vertoningen van minimaal 5 seconden in een actief beeld. Een beetje mijn persoonlijke paradepaadje. Ik zie ook een rol weggelegd voor het IAB om hiermee aan de slag te gaan. Overigens zal notabene deze website de kwaliteit van bannerposities meer-en-meer gaan publiceren. Niet over de totale markt, maar wel op een aantal belangrijke posities.

Opvallend of eigen wel komisch is dat diezelfde exploitanten wel weer heel actief met exotischere zaken als Behavioral targeting of Re-targeting bezig zijn. Maar bij een BT-campagne blijft men dezelfde ‘waste’ houden. Als exploitanten er nu gewoon voor zorgen dat 100% in beeld komt en daarop afrekenen, en pas daarna zaken als targeting van stal halen, dan zal de effectiviteit van online display campagnes met sprongen (lees minimaal 50%) omhoog gaan. Als kwaliteit een lineaire relatie heeft met kwaliteit zien we ook dat goede exploitanten substantieel meer inkomsten gaan genereren. Nog los van het feit dat exploitanten dan ook een betere afweging kunnen maken welke posities via Remnant inventory naar exchange programma’s kunnen worden gestuurd.
Kortom, inzage van de werkelijke effectiviteit en kwaliteit van bannerposities is positief voor alle partijen ‘involved’ in de digitale advertentie-arena, maar vooral voor de exploitanten zelf.
